Captain’s Log: Star date 11th April 2025 – Gosfield Lakes:

Thank you to Dave Watts for proposing such a lovely venue – course and hospitality for our first away day of 2025. Plus massive thanks to Steve King for making arrangements and booking nearly a year ago. Steve, it’s amazing how you selected an excellent bright and sunny day, better than Carol’s forecast and sorry you could not join.

Thanks also to Andrew Wyatt for his photography and Dave Sephton for posting on our website.

Gosfield’s event hosts Kate and Gerry made the preparation and day’s activities run very smoothly.
Twenty Venerables ventured out into the heat of Essex. A mixture of two guests (John Ellis and Steve Board); two new Venerables (Iain Reid and Richard Sharpe); two Venerable ‘weekenders’ (Ray Tweddle and Alan Hawkins) complementing the 14 established Venerables. Thank you all for attending, it makes the days worthwhile.

The day began with coffee and bacon roll on arrival before playing a new course for most. We were greeted with lush wide fairways and greens that challenged many, but for a few maybe not that challenging?! Scores mainly 30 to 38 and ranging from 24 to (read on...).

After golf we had a two course carvery, where the first course was as demanding as the golf course - Two meats, six vegetable dishes and two accompaniments. Belts needed to be loosened but then a devastating question from Chef Clare - “Anyone for seconds?” There was an audible sigh, as we still had dessert - a choice of three options to follow. Wow.

After dinner, prizes were awarded, though maybe next time if the meal is so generous, prizes need to be Gaviscon rather than wine.

Before announcing the Winter Stableford prize winners, what I and maybe a few others didn’t envisage was President’s Trump’s recent tariffs leading to several bandits coming to our event. Possibly next time we need a counter-tariff to help those less fortunate:
Captain’s Away Day prize winners were:

  • NTP (hole 8) – Martin Arthur (Belgium beer & glass pack) beating Steve Board.
  • NTP in 2 (hole 13) – Dave Watts (bottle of wine) beating Iain Reid and myself.

  • Best Guest – A ‘new participant’, Steve Board (31 pts) winning a bottle of wine.
  • 3rd place – Richard Sharpe (40 pts); bottle of wine and leader in the clubhouse until the next group arrived with sombreros shielding their eye watering points:

  • 2nd place – Kevin Esplin (44 pts); bottle of wine
